How to Use American Express Points for Flights

Through the American Express Membership Rewards program, customers can earn points through purchases made on their American Express card. If you have at least 5,000 rewards points, you can redeem your points for flights, hotels, vacation packages and cruises. Flights are easy to find and redeem through the American Express Membership Rewards website.

Instructions

      Click on the link "American Express Membership Rewards" under "References" at the bottom of this page. It will take you to the American Express website, where you can search for flights.

      Log in to your American Express Membership Rewards account by entering your username and password under the heading "Log In."

      Search for a flight by entering the departure and arrival locations and dates. Click "Search Flights" to continue.

      Look through the options and choose a flight. Next to each flight will appear its reward points information, listing points needed for purchase, cost of the flight in U.S. dollars and the number of points in your account. Click on the prompt at the bottom of the page to continue to the billing process.

      Choose how you want to pay for your flight. You can choose to pay for the entire flight with points, pay with cash and points or pay with only cash. Enter your American Express card number and billing information to complete the process. You will see the entire cost of the flight on your billing statement. You will see a credit to your account for any amount paid with points.
