The Belize River originates in Guatemala and runs eastward through the tropical forests of Belize and reaches the Caribbean Sea just north of Belize City. The shores of this tropical river are overgrown with palm, bamboo, mango and mahogany trees. While fishing, keep your eyes and ears open for large iguanas falling into the water from riverbank trees.
You'll find many fishing lodges and outfitters along the Belize River. A prime destination for anglers wishing to fish the Belize River is the Belize River Lodge, 3.5 miles from the river's mouth. Here, you can choose to fish with the Lodge as home base or stay aboard a motor yacht.
Permit up to 30 pounds can be snagged while fly-fishing in the Olde River and the area's mangrove lagoons. You're bound to enjoy the tarpon fishing between March and July, as the resident tarpons range in size from 5 to 200 pounds. Other species usually found in this area include bonefish, snook, cubera, grouper and snapper.
