Major Airlines That Allow Travel With a Cat

Travelers have a lot to think about when it comes to taking cats aboard airplanes with them. Some airlines do not carry pets at all, and some only allow them in a separate storage area. But several major airlines allow cats as carry-ons, as long as your cat carrier meets size requirements.
  1. United Airlines

    • United allows cats in the aircraft cabin, in addition to one carry-on bag, on most flights within the U.S. There is a $125 service charge each way, per cat. Cats traveling in-cabin must be carried in an approved kennel that must fit completely under the seat in front of you.

    U.S. Airways

    • U.S. Airways allows one cat per passenger in the cabin for $125 each way.
The airline cautions travelers to check the policy of other airlines when booking flights for which more than one airline is used to reach a destination. Carry-on pets are not allowed to or from Europe, South America, the Middle East, Antigua, Bridgetown Barbados, Montego Bay, Jamaica or St. Lucia.

    Southwest

    • For $75 each way, Southwest allows small cats in carriers that can be stowed under the customer's seat. There is no pet storage area and the airline allows no more than five pets on board any single flight. But you can carry up to two cats in one carrier if they both fit comfortably inside it.

    Delta

    • Delta allows cats in the cabin for $125 each way within the U.S and to and from Canada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Cats flying to Brazil can fly for $75. However, Delta does not allow pets in the cabin on flights to or from South Africa, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom or Hawaii. Cats must be at least 10 weeks old.

    American Airlines

    • American allows cats in the cabin, but all pets must have valid health certificates. The airline allows no more than seven pets on any single flight. Cats fly for $125 each way within and between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central America, Colombia and the Caribbean, provided the country of arrival permits entry. Carry-on pets are not allowed to or from Hawaii, Europe, Asia and most South American countries.

    Foreign Airlines

    • Several major foreign airlines allow customers and their cats in the cabin, including Air Canada, Air France, Lufthansa, Alitalia, El Al, KLM Royal Dutch and
      Swiss International.
