Do it Yourself: Immigration Kits

Whether you, your family, your relatives or your clients intend to move abroad, immigrating to another country is a serious undertaking that requires you to surmount a number of logistical hurdles. These include securing residency visas, finding a place to live, setting up local bank accounts and establishing a social life in the new location. With adequate research and patience, you can pull all this information together into an all-in-one "immigration kit" and make moving to the new country a relatively smooth process.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the website of the nearest embassy or consulate of the country you intend to immigrate to. Under "Visas," "Consular Services" or another similar title, you will find detailed steps in the process of securing a visa. Countries have separate visas depending on a person's circumstances and what he intends to do in the new country. For example, you can apply for retirement visas, tourist visas, investor visas or work visas. Each type of visa has different requirements and processes to follow, which include producing such documents as a valid passport, a job offer or official bank statements.

    • 2

Bookmark the website or save the information in a new document. Note down what type of visa will best suit your circumstances, which required documents you already have and which ones you will need to obtain.

    • 3

Download the forms for the desired visa type from the embassy or consulate website and save them to your computer. If the embassy does not provide these forms online, contact the embassy by phone or email and request that they send you these forms by mail or otherwise arrange for you to receive them.

Find a list of real estate agents in the area you desire to immigrate to. Ask for recommendations on expatriate forums, use a search engine to perform an online search or get in contact with a local expatriate services company. Compile a list of relevant phone numbers and websites for the area, including the medical emergency line, police, fire and tax authorities. You can find this information on the local city or regional websites of the country you wish to immigrate to. Otherwise, ask the nearest U.S. embassy for assistance in obtaining this information.

    • 5

Find a list of local banks by performing an Internet search or asking for recommendations on expatriate forums. Contact each bank and ask what services they offer and how foreigners might open an account with them. If you don't speak the country's language, ask a bilingual friend or hire someone to help you.

Contact the U.S. embassy in the country you are immigrating to and ask about any local social clubs or organizations that welcome expatriates.
