Immigration Requirements in Holland

Holland, also commonly known as the Netherlands, is a small country located in Western Europe. Holland's mixture of cultures makes it an interesting and diverse place to live, work and visit. Holland requires several different immigration documents, depending on the applicant's country of residence and the length of the applicant's stay in Holland.
  1. Standard Immigration Documents

    • To temporarily or permanently immigrate to Holland, you must have a valid passport. The passport must be issued by the your country of citizenship, have at least one blank page and be valid for at least six months past the expiration date of the visa. You also must submit additional passport photos, a money order to pay the visa fees and the appropriate visa application.

    European Economic Area (EEA)

    • Citizens of other nations in the European Economic Area do not need additional documentation to live and work in Holland. Because of treaties and regulations, all citizens of the European Economic Area are able to immigrate and move freely within that zone, which includes all 27 European Union countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

    Schengen Zone

    • Holland requires citizens of some countries to obtain a Schengen visa entry into the country. This tourism visa is for those who intend on traveling within the Schengan zone, which includes Holland, for less than 90 days within a six-month period. The Schengan Zone comprises 25 European countries.The Schengen visa application, a passport, additional passport photos and the required fees must be submitted to the nearest Netherlands embassy or consulate in your home country.

    American Tourists

    • Holland does not require American citizens to obtain a Schengen visa for tourism if the duration of the visit is 90 days or less.

    Residency Permit

    • For those who seek to reside in Holland for more than 90 days, a residency permit must be obtained before they are allowed to stay in the country. The Immigration and Naturalization Service of the Netherlands (IND) must approve the application. The agency considers reasons for staying in the Netherlands, such as work or study, and either approve or deny the application. Applicants for a residency permit must submit the standard documentation, a medical exam, proof of medical insurance, proof of funds while in the country and proof of no criminal record. It can take up to 6 months to process a residency permit.
