How to Ship a Car to Hawaii

If you are planning to relocate to Hawaii then you may be wondering how you are going to get your car there. Cars can actually be shipped to the Hawaiian Islands, but the cost is prohibitive. If you have a used car that is already paid for, your best bet would be to sell it and buy another one with the money when you get to your destination. If, however, you have a rather nice, expensive car you will want to pay the price to ship it.

Things You'll Need

  • Shipping company
  • Drop off point
  • Pick up point
  • Pen and paper

Instructions

    • 1

Have a list of your car's information handy before you make the call to the shipping company. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and write down the following: make and model, the car's year, number of doors on the car, car color, license plate number and VIN number.

    • 2

Make sure your car is ready. You must have registration documents and insurance papers for your car. You will also need at least a 1/4 of a tank of gas to be left in your car when you drop it off. Finally, clean your car out and make sure it is free from all personal items.

    • 3

Make arrangements with a shipping company (see Resources below). Once you make arrangements and discuss pricing (you can expect to pay about $2,000 and up), plan your drop off date.

    • 4

Bring your car to the drop off destination you chose. It will most likely be one of the following cities: San Diego, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, San Francisco or Seattle.

    • 5

Pay your fee and make arrangements for your pick up date and Hawaii location. There are several Hawaiian Island drop off locations, so find out ahead of time where your main port will be.
