How to travel Mosul in 2024

Mosul was declared fully liberated from the Islamic State in July 2017, after nine months of heavy fighting that destroyed many major landmarks and residential areas in the city.

However, in 2024 the city is expected to still be very unsafe, with numerous threats to personal safety posed by both criminal groups still controlling areas of the city, unexploded ordnance from the liberation effort, as well as ongoing military operations against remaining extremist cells. Therefore under current conditions there is absolutely no travel advice to visit the city, and attempting to enter may even come with a very strict prohibition and possibly criminal prosecution. Any plans on when it would be considered somewhat safe again entirely depend on how events and reconstruction evolve, the current estimation being sometime between 2026 and perhaps as late as 2030 or even later.
