How do I Be Safe Around Volcanoes?

In October 2010 there were 12 volcanoes around the world exhibiting activity. To see a volcano erupt is to see the creation of new land. Volcano viewing requires taking the greatest care to remain safe.
  1. Volcanic Fumes

    • Active volcanoes create gases that should not be breathed. These gases produce a distinct smell of sulfur. The fumes can be particularly dangerous to those with heart or breathing problems and viewers should not stand down-wind of potential fumes

    Keep to Protected Areas

    • Areas of volcanic activity can be very unstable. Paths that appear safe may have lava tubes running beneath them. Weight on top of these flows can cause collapse. Be careful near cliff or steam vents.

    Proper Equipment

    • The U.S. Geological Survey recommends taking a supply pack to view volcanoes. This pack should include: drinking water, sturdy, closed-toe boots or shoes, long pants, gloves, first aid kit, flashlight, sunscreen and a sun hat.

    Activity Updates

    • Always check with the local park rangers or authorities regarding the current volcanic conditions. Obey signs and restrictions.
