Active volcanoes create gases that should not be breathed. These gases produce a distinct smell of sulfur. The fumes can be particularly dangerous to those with heart or breathing problems and viewers should not stand down-wind of potential fumes
Areas of volcanic activity can be very unstable. Paths that appear safe may have lava tubes running beneath them. Weight on top of these flows can cause collapse. Be careful near cliff or steam vents.
The U.S. Geological Survey recommends taking a supply pack to view volcanoes. This pack should include: drinking water, sturdy, closed-toe boots or shoes, long pants, gloves, first aid kit, flashlight, sunscreen and a sun hat.
Always check with the local park rangers or authorities regarding the current volcanic conditions. Obey signs and restrictions.
