Is it illegal to have blue lights on your car in South Carolina?

It is illegal to have blue lights on your car in South Carolina unless you are a law enforcement officer or authorized emergency responder. South Carolina law states that it is unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle equipped with any of the following:

- Any red light resembling the red lights used or provided for vehicles of the Department of Public Safety, Department of Natural Resources, or County sheriff.

- Any red, white, or blue combination of lights in the front of the vehicle which could be confused with the lights of a law enforcement vehicle.

- Any flashing or revolving blue light on a motor vehicle when the vehicle is operated on any public street or highway of this State for the purpose of conveying prisoners between places of incarceration or while transporting dangerous or mentally disturbed persons.

The only exceptions to this law are for law enforcement officers and authorized emergency responders who are using blue lights in the performance of their official duties.
