According to the law, it is unlawful for any person to leave an animal in a motor vehicle under the following circumstances:
1. If the animal could not exit the vehicle;
2. Unless the motor vehicle is parked in an area where the interior temperature is not likely to create an extreme hazard to the animal;
3. If the motor vehicle is not locked and the window at least partially open to allow for sufficient air circulation; and
4. Unless there is sufficient water and ventilation for the animal.
A person who violates this provision is guilty of a misdemeanor and is subject to a fine of not less than $200 and not more than $1000.
In addition, a person who leaves an animal in a motor vehicle and the animal is injured or dies as a result may also be held liable for animal cruelty charges.
