Scappoose Bay is a tidal bay affected primarily by the Columbia River, which divides Oregon from Washington. Fed by a number of tributaries, including small creeks and drainage from the higher forest areas that surround it, Scappoose Bay creates excellent habitat for a number waterfowl, predatory birds, migratory birds, fish, amphibians and mammals. The closest large city to Scappoose Bay is Portland, which lies approximately 25 miles to the south. Other natural interests near the bay are Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, Sturgeon and Vancouver lakes and Mount Saint Helens. The winters can be cold and wet, but year-round temperatures in the region are usually mild.
Scappoose Bay Kayaking is the only company providing guided kayak tours of Scappoose Bay as of early 2011. The home office is located in Warren, Oregon, only a few minutes from the bay's boat ramps. The owners are Bonnie and Steve Gibbons, who have intimate knowledge of Oregon, the Columbia River and Scappoose Bay.
