Volunteer Vacations on Working Farms

Vacations often offer an escape from the drudgery of everyday life but time away can be more than just an entertaining getaway. Through a variety of programs, you can have a volunteer vacation on a working farm where you will spend your time helping people, meeting new people and possibly even exploring a different country.
  1. WWOOF-USA

    • World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) is an organization which helps willing volunteers to find organic farms where they can trade a half day's work for room and board. Participating farms can be found all over the country. You must join WWOOF to view each farm's full profile but once you are a member you will have full access to the organization's offerings. Profiles detail the lifestyle of the farm family, the work you would be required to do and the type of accommodations you will have.

Once you find a farm that you're interested in visiting, you contact the farm owners directly to arrange your visit. This gives you complete control over the type of working vacation you want to have. You can also access detailed information on exactly where you are headed, to avoid any surprises on arrival. Many farms welcome couples, families and children as well as individuals, though you should check with your host when making arrangements if you are not travelling alone.

Some arrangements will even allow participants to work at various locations in more than one country. You will be paid for your work on these farms, though room and board are deducted from your earnings.
