Intermediate level surfers wanting to improve their skills, should consider staying at the Casa Verde Guest House in Ricon and taking a combination of group and private surfing lessons from Ricon Surf School. The guest house has three types of rooms: studios for two or three people, one bedroom/one bath for four people, and a two bedroom with bath for up to six people. Ricon Surf School has three choices for intermediate surfers wanting to work on their surfing skills. Two full days of instruction cost $180 per person plus seven percent tax. The first day surfers work on improving their basic skills, then on the second day they try more advanced surfing. The second option is three full days of instruction for $260 per person. This allows surfers more instructional time on intermediate and advanced surfing moves. Private lessons start at $75 per person for a group of two, and include an hour of free surfboard rental after the lesson. This is a good option for surfers wanting to learn something more than the group lessons offer, or for surfers just wanting to surf on their own for most of thier vacation. An original and different type of summer camp, Puerto Rico Surf Camp, offers one week camp sessions for children and teens aged 6 to 16 years old. In addition to surfing lessons, the camp includes: a professional surfer guest speaker, conversation in both English and Spanish, breakfast, lunch and snacks, swimming lessons, Guajataca River kayak trips, snorkeling, and instruction in marine biology and in the local coastal animals and plants. Parents are welcome to participate in activities for an additional fee.
The camp is run out of the Guajataca Beach Resort, which is near the Guajataca National Forest. Camps run Monday through Friday in June and July. Registration is limited to 16 campers, with a maximum four-to-one, camper to staff ratio. As of 2010 the fee for a one week session is $160 and a camp t-shirt costs $10.
