Pheasant Hunting in Kimball, South Dakota

Located in south-central South Dakota, Kimball is part of Brule County, which produced an average of 10.6 birds per hunter during the 2009 pheasant-hunting season, compared to the statewide average of 9.85.

    • Kimball has six waterfowl protection areas, or WPAs that permit upland game hunting for pheasant: the 480-acre Holoubek, the 42-acre Kimball, the 78-acre Lake Sixteen, the 820-acre Koss, the 160-acre Pipal and the 179-acre Stanek Waterfowl Protection Area.

    Seasons & Regulations

    • You may hunt pheasant in Kimball from October 16 through October 22 from noon to sunset, and from October 23 through January 2 from 10 a.m. to sunset. Hunters may keep a maximum of three roosters, or male pheasant, per day for a total of no more than 15 roosters during the season.

    Licenses

    • All pheasant hunters in Kimball must buy a small game license at season-long or one-day and resident or non-resident rates. Youth and combination licenses are available, and all licenses may be purchased online at the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks website.
