Since 1994, when 46 women from around the world competed in one of the most successful Women's World Hang Gliding Championships, Lake Chelan has become known as the "Recreational Hang Gliding Capitol of the World", according to the Lake Chelan site cometothelake.com. Flights of 100 or miles are not uncommon from the Chelan Sky Park. Several hang gliding world championship events are held at Lake Chelan each year.
The hang gliding club of Lake Chelan, the Chelan Flyers, notes that since there are no tandem-rated hang gliding pilots living in Chelan, those who are interested in tours must arrange them in advance through one of the U.S. Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association certified pilots in Washington.
