How to Canoe the Shenandoah River

The Shenandoah River has beautiful remote and well-traveled areas across crystal clear, beautifully-rocked river bottoms. Take the trip of a lifetime in any form you want, but canoeing is a favorite of many. Through facilities near the river, you can rent canoes to experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States. Instructions

  1. Plan Your Canoe Trip

    • 1

Contact the Front Royal Company, Downriver Canoe Company, Shenandoah River Outfitters or one of the other high touch rental companies located on the river to reserve your canoe rental well in advance. This is particularly important during their busier seasons.

    • 2

Choose the type of trip you want to take-slow fishing, easy-day floating or whitewater. The Shenandoah River will give you exactly what you want.

    • 3

Decide on your trip dates, then download and fill out the reservation and release forms while you are on their site. The site contains all of the information you need about trips and equipment available.

    • 4

Make your reservations if you want to stay in a cabin. There are many located in key areas along the river. If you would prefer camp out, you can rent the tents from most outfitters.

    Enjoy Your Canoe Trip

    • 5

Amaze yourself as you look at the sites. Located between Shenandoah National Park to the east and George Washington National Forest to the west, this river is truly a premier trip for family or thrill seekers alike.

    • 6

Pull out of the water when you get hungry and set up your portable grill to have hamburgers or open up the lunch basket of sandwiches.

    • 7

Note the mile markers along the river. This way you will have an idea of where you are and how far you have come in your trip.

    • 8

Try Compton's Rapid for a big thrill (a Class II thrill in a canoe). As with any river, you will have deep holes in the Shenandoah as well as other exciting areas. After you go through Compton's Rapid, stop a while at the exquisite swimming beach just below the rapid.
