How to Mine Diamonds

Mine for diamonds on your next vacation, right here in the U.S.A. Enjoy the thrill of the treasure hunt and keep the loot, if you're lucky. It's fun, it's legal and open to the public. Diamond mining also makes a great family vacation because it combines adventure and lots of outdoor exercise to boot.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, or the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism to get information about this diamond mine. It is presently the only diamond mine in the world that offers access to the public.

    • 2

Choose your travel dates. The park is open daily for public mining all year, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Years Day. Summer operating hours (Memorial Day through Labor Day) are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The park's closing time is 5 p.m. the rest of the year.

    • 3

Book travel and accommodations. The public diamond mine is located less than 100 miles from Hot Springs, Arkansas, or Texarkana, Arkansas. Make flight reservations to either city and reserve a rental car or RV to drive to the Crater of Diamonds Park.

    • 4

Get driving directions from your hometown from the park's website (see Resources below). Rent a public campsite or make hotel reservations here too.

    • 5

Pay a small admissions fee for adults and children (ages 6 to 12 only). Children under 6 can go diamond mining free. Group discounts are available.

    • 6

Rent or buy small hand tools and non-motorized digging equipment at the park. Bring your own hand tools or try searching without tools.

    • 7

Collect diamonds during the park's open hours. Park staff can help identify the diamonds and other gems that you find while mining. They offer free certification and referrals to diamond cutters. You must consult a gemologist to determine whether your mining finds are valuable or just great souvenirs.
