Check U.S. State Department advisories before attending such events as the Jerusalem Festival, the Jerash Festival in Jordan or the Israel Festival.

    • 2

Book a flight and make hotel and travel arrangements in advance. Middle Eastern nations like Turkey, Israel and Kuwait are more friendly to Americans than others, so consider one of the major cities in these countries. Hotels offer specials on their rooms if it's off-peek season, and if you're part of a large group. Websites like Priceline or Travelocity may help you get a flight, hotel and rental car for one flat rate.

Before visiting the Middle East, you'll need to have a passport that is valid for at least nine months. Driver's licenses from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada are valid in some parts of the Middle East, so make sure you bring it along. Bring any other necessary identification, prescriptions for emergencies and phone numbers/contact lists in case you need them.

    • 4

Make yourself aware of your surroundings so that you and your family can feel safe.

    • 5

Know the culture. Going to another region of the world is the best way to learn about other ways of life. The overwhelming majority of the people in the region are Muslim, but there are also concentrations of Christians, Jews and others. Learn what is acceptable and what is not when in their company.
