Roller Coaster Fatalities: Rare but Real—Averages in the U.S.

Roller coaster fatalities are extremely rare. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), from 2014 through 2022, there was an average of 2 fatal roller coaster accidents per year in the United States. This includes all fixed-site amusement parks, carnivals, and water parks. With hundreds of millions of rides annually, the fatality risk is on the order of 1 in 100–200 million rides. Most incidents involve rider error (standing up, unfastening restraints), pre-existing medical conditions, or rare mechanical failures. Modern coasters employ redundant restraint systems, block zones, computer monitoring, and rigorous inspection protocols (ASTM F2291). The industry's safety record compares favorably to many common activities (driving, swimming). Nonetheless, riders should always follow posted rules, secure restraints, and disclose health concerns.
