Use a knife to ccut down two canes of bamboo about 2 inches thick. One piece should be about the distance from your stomach to the ground and the other a bit shorter.
Split the shorter piece of bamboo in half lengthways, but not all the way through.
Pile up some dry reeds in an open area of ground where you want to build the fire. These must be dry. If not, the fire won't take. Dry leaves will be just as effective.
Secure the longer piece of bamboo between your stomach and the floor, padding the stomach end with a rolled up piece of clothing, such as a T-shirt, socks or shorts.
Rub the shorter piece of bamboo up and down the longer piece using two hands until a groove starts to appear in it.
Peel away some of the bamboo stem. Place it in the cut already made to act as tinder. Cover with a piece of the outside casing of the bamboo.
Continue the sawing motion until the tinder inside the bamboo starts to burn. The hot dust created by the bamboo saw and the tinder should light the dry reeds. Blow on the tinder to introduce extra oxygen. This will help the fire take hold.
Build up the fire using wood, bamboo and more dried reeds.
