Five-Suit Bridge: Doesn't Exist—Standard Bridge Uses Four Suits

There is no such game as "five-suit bridge." Contract bridge—the standard competitive and social form—uses a standard 52-card deck with four suits: spades (♠), hearts (♥), diamonds (♦), and clubs (♣).

Historical Note

A five-suited deck (adding "crowns" or "eagles" as a fifth suit) was marketed in the 1930s by Parker Brothers and others, with specialized bridge rules. It never gained traction and is long obsolete.

Bridge Basics

• Players: 4 (two partnerships)
• Deck: 52 cards, 4 suits × 13 ranks
• Phases: Bidding (auction) → Play (13 tricks) → Scoring
• Goal: Fulfill contract (bid number of tricks + 6) with designated trump suit or notrump

Variants exist (duplicate, rubber, Chicago), but all use the standard four-suit deck. Five-suit bridge remains a historical curiosity, not a played game.
