How to Find Quito's Best Tourist Spots

Quito is the capital of the Northwestern South American nation of Ecuador. Quito is the second biggest city in the country, following only Guayaquil. Quito is the second highest elevated capital city in the world, with the city's main square at about 9,350 feet high. With rich Colonial heritage, natural scenery and a proud culture, there is no shortage of things to do and see while in this lovely South American capital city.       Go to Ecuador Government Palace. This palace was built by the President of the Royal Council (Baron Hector de Calondelet) between the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It is a rather intriguing sight. Be sure to check out the mural by Ecuadorean artist Oswaldo Guayasamin, which depicts the discovery of the Amazon River from 1542.

      Explore La Casa de la Cultura. This is a very important museum that is focused on Ecuadorean culture. Established in 1838, the museum is located in a Colonial house in the heart of Quito's Historical District. There are many historical Ecuadorean artifacts, including photographs, paintings, and costume.

      Spend some time at the Carmen Alto Church and Convent. This temple, built in 1653 is an absolute masterpiece, full of intricate details and lovely carvings. The carvings of the pulpit and altar were created by Diego de Robles, a Spanish artist. Be sure to check out the house where Santa Mariana de Jesus resided, where the convent is currently located.

      Visit the Itchimbia Park and Cultural Center. This park is located on a sacred hill in Quito. Many refer to Itchimbia as Quito's "drugstore" because of the vast array of medicinal plants and herbs. Be sure to check out the Cultural Center inside the park. The Cultural Center is called the Crystal Palace because of its large windows and majestic views of downtown Quito.

      Visit the House of Sucre Museum. This museum displays the personal artifacts and military memorabilia of the Marshal of Ayacucho as well as his wife. Back in 1977, the Ministry of Defense discovered this house that once was the residence of Antonio Jose de Sucre and his wife, Mariana Carcelen. Since then this has been one of the most popular museums in Quito.
