Visit the Auckland Art Gallery. Situated at the southeast corner of Albert Park, this building is in the classic French Renaissance style. Be sure to take a look at the high pitched roofs and towers. The most exciting part is Gray Gallery, which has a vast array of contemporary New Zealand art.
Go to the Ferry Building. This is a wonderful landmark on Auckland's harbor front. Built in the English Baroque manner, the building is made of sandstone and brick on a granite base. It was finished in 1912 and designed by Alexander Wiseman. There is also a restaurant located here.
Take in the view from the Sky Tower in the city center. Just west of Queen Street is this intimidating and sleek structure that is a symbol of Auckland. There is a revolving restaurant and viewing platform that is comparable to Seattle's Space Needle. The view from the observation deck is a panoramic view of the Auckland skyline.
Take a stroll along Queen Street. Queen Street is a bustling and lively city street with many high rise buildings, banks, companies, restaurants, department stores and boutiques. Not only are there many activities here, but the architecture is also visually fascinating with its mixture of art deco structures and buildings from the Colonial period.
Explore One Tree Hill in the southern portion of Auckland. This is a volcanic cone that has ramparts of Maori Pa at the top of the hill. The top of the hill has some of the best view points in the city. Auckland's founder, John Logan Campbell, built a vast farm on One Tree Hill in the 1830s. This is both a historic and scenic site.
