Visit the Jalan Pekojan Old Houses. These idyllic and charming Chinese houses were constructed in the 1770s (period of Chinese colonial rule) as a place for the Chinese community to settle. They were built by Chinese contractors in Jakarta. Now, many of the houses have been converted to ash houses and temples.
Check out the Irian Jaya Liberation Monument. This statue is in the midst of the very green Lapangan Banteng. Many locals refer to it, casually, as the Incredible Hulk. The statue depicts a man breaking free from shackles and chains. It was constructed in 1963 to celebrate the independence of Indonesia from the Dutch.
Go to the Istana Merdeka/Presidential Palace. Formerly known as Koningsplein Palais, this structure was built between the years of 1873 and 1879. It is a wonderful way to view beautiful Neoclassical architecture in Indonesia. The well-preserved, immaculate gardens are also a must-see.
Shop in the Kelapa Gading District. This North Jakarta area is home to numerous shopping centers and malls. The rather upscale vibe of the district provides Indonesians with many designer boutiques and shops. However, there are many reasonable mid-level department stores and chains here as well. The restaurants here are particularly notable, as there are countless excellent international and local dining options here.
Spend the afternoon at Museum Wayang/Puppet Museum. This unique and quirky museum displays puppets from all parts of Indonesia. The puppets range from centuries old up to the modern day. Be sure to check out the Wayang Kulit and Wayang Golek as well as the shadow puppet exhibitions.
