Visit the Ixchel Museum of Mayan Costumes in Guatemala City. This museum has an extensive collection of Guatemalan textiles that go as far back as the nineteenth century. The materials were collected from over 120 Guatemalan communities. There is also a section devoted entirely to paintings of the country's diverse regional apparel (see Resources below).
Go to the Popol Vuh Museum (Museo Popol Vuh) in Guatemala City. This museum has an impressive collection of Mayan artworks. Popol Vuh is the only museum on earth that has a Mayan Sarcophagus. There is a vast amount of Colonial art and folk art here. There are hundreds of masks and costumes on display as well (see Resources below).
Stop by the Captain-General's Palace in Antigua, Guatemala. This is one of the most majestic and historic buildings in the entire country. In existence since 1543, the building has repeatedly been rebuilt after damaging earthquakes. This was the headquarters for the Spanish colonial government for over two centuries. The Captain General resided here. It is now currently a museum with many artifacts from the palace's centuries of being (see Resources below).
Check out Casa Popenoe in Antigua. This is a charming seventeenth century colonial house that offers visitors a peek into the life of a Spanish noble person from that era. The house is delightfully furnished with antiques and an authentic colonial style kitchen. The house holds an impressive collection of paintings as well (see Resources below).
Explore nature at Semuc Champney in the Western Highlands. You can find a natural cave here, as well as terraced pools that cascade through the forest. The beautiful Cahabon River runs through here. A national monument, this area full of greenery and water, and is one of the loveliest nature sites in Guatemala (see Resources below).
