What is the best season to travel Morocco?

The best time to visit Morocco is in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), when the weather is mild around the country and the landscapes are at their most lush and colourful.

Morocco's climate varies dramatically from region to region. The country has three zones, each with distinct weather: the Atlantic coast, the Mediterranean coast and the interior mountain ranges.

Spring (March-May): The weather in spring is temperate and pleasant throughout Morocco. The days are warm and sunny, with average temperatures between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F) and the nights are cool, but not cold, with temperatures averaging between 10°C and 15°C (50°F and 59°F). The landscapes of Morocco come into their own during this time, as the flowers bloom in profusion after the winter rains and the countryside turns lush and green.

Autumn (September-November): The weather in autumn is very similar to that in spring. The temperature during the day is between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F) and the nights are also similarly cool. The landscapes continue to be lush, but the vegetation has had a little more time to dry out, which may be appreciated by those who don't like things too lush and green.

Summer (June-August): Temperatures in summer can soar in Morocco, especially in the south. In Marrakesh, the daytime temperatures reach 37°C (99°F) on average, while the nights are still a relatively warm 25°C (77°F). It's not just in Marrakesh that things heat up in summer; Fes and Meknes are only a slightly cooler 35°C (95°F) and 32°C (90°F), while daytime temperatures in the coastal city of Agadir hit a high of 29°C (84°F) (average July temperatures). Even the mountain towns of the High Atlas are toasty in summer, with daytime temperatures averaging 30°C (86°F), though in the Rif Mountains to the north, temperatures are comparatively cooler, with a July average of 27°C (81°F) around Chefchaouen. The heat of the sun is relentless and the country is dry and dusty, making the landscape feel a little barren and arid. Some coastal areas get a little respite from the heat, thanks to the cooling sea breezes, and can be relatively pleasant as a holiday destination.

Winter (December-February): The weather in winter is relatively mild in the coastal regions, with average daytime temperatures of around 18°C (64°F) in the Atlantic and 15°C (59°F) in the Mediterranean. The nights can be cold, especially in January, the coldest month, when temperatures can drop as low as 5°C (41°F) at night in some areas. Temperatures are considerably cooler in the mountain areas, where snow falls between December and February, and in the desert regions, where there can be lows of 5°C (41°F). As such, winter is generally not the best time to travel to inland and southern Morocco, however temperatures are still fairly pleasant in the coastal regions, making them a good location for a winter break away from colder climes.
