Cheap, Fun Activities for Kids in the Greenville, South Carolina Area

Greenville County hosts a variety of kid-friendly activities that cost less than a family's admission to the movies. Greenville and its surrounding area offer sports venues, water parks and zoological exhibits for children's entertainment and education. Many venues and attractions offer discounted children's admission and family packages, along with special kids' programs and events throughout the year.
  1. Attend a Road Warriors Hockey Game

    • The Greenville Road Warriors are minor league affiliates of the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers in the East Coast Hockey League who began their inaugural season in October, 2010. The Road Warriors play their home games at Greenville's Bi-Lo center and ticket prices started at nine dollars as of November, 2010. Children 12 and under get two dollars off admission to the $13 and $17 seats and the Road Warriors offer Friday Family Four-Packs for $48, which includes four tickets and refreshments for four people.

    Cool Off at Discovery Island

    • Discovery Island is located between Mauldin and Simpsonville, 20 minutes from downtown Greenville. The park has two water slides, the Flow-Rider wave pool and a lazy river, which allows guests to drift gently around the park while riding inner tubes. Children have to be at least four feet tall to ride Discovery Island's body slide and children under four feet must be accompanied by a companion taller than four feet to ride the tube slide. Discovery Island is open from late May through early December and charges $11 for guests four feet and taller and eight dollars for guests under four feet. Discovery Island does not charge admission for infants.

    Explore Parris Mountain State Park

    • The Civilian Conservation Corps established Parris Mountain State Park four miles from Greenville during the Great Depression. The park provides camping facilities, picnic areas and trails for hikers and bicyclists, though the park doesn't permit mountain bikes on its trails on Saturdays. Guests can also fish in Lake Placid and rent kayaks, canoes and paddle boats. Park admission as of November, 2010 was two dollars for adults, $1.50 for seniors and free for children under 16. Parris Mountain allows guests to bring leashed pets into the park.

    Visit the Greenville Zoo

    • The Greenville Zoo covers 10 acres within Cleveland Park, featuring wildlife such as monkeys, alligators, giraffes and leopards. The zoo also provides a picnic ground, concession stand and children's play area. The Greenville Zoo hosts educational programs throughout the year such as Zoo Tots, designed to introduce toddlers to the world's wildlife, and Saturday Safaris, which teach children about the zoo's residents with classroom lessons, arts and crafts activities and visits to the animals. As of November, 2010, adult admission is $7.75, children under 16 are $4.50 and admission is free for children under three. The Greenville Zoo is open year-round with the exceptions of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
