Fun Activities for Kids in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge is known for its Cajun cuisine, as the state capital city of Louisiana and as the home of Louisiana State University. The city of just more than 223,000--in the southeastern part of the state off the Mississippi River--includes fun activities that will keep kids entertained. They include a zoo, an amusement and water park and a hands-on art and science museum.
  1. Baton Rouge Zoo

    • The Baton Rouge Zoo gives kids an opportunity to pet farm animals in the Safari Playground area of its KidsZoo section. Additionally, visitors can see animals from all around the world. The Baton Rouge Zoo includes Asian elephants, Malayan tigers, Sumatran tigers, otters, a baby rhino and birds from the tropics such as parrots.

      The L'aquarium de Louisiane exhibit has amphibians, fish and reptiles from the state. Other attractions in the zoo include a tram ride that gives a narrated tour of the venue and a railroad ride around the zoo.

    Blue Bayou Waterpark/Dixie Landin' Family Theme Park

    • Families can find a variety of things to do at the Blue Bayou Waterpark/Dixie Landin' Family Theme Park. The admission price includes access to both parks, which are next to one another. Dixie Landin' has a Kiddie Section with slow-moving rides for kids. They include a car ride, in which kids can maneuver a Model T replica, and a plane ride.

      Other kids' activities include a family roller coaster, a Ferris wheel and a train ride. Older kids can go on some of the rides in both parks, such as water slides, log flumes and a steel roller coaster.

    Louisiana Art and Science Museum

    • The Louisiana Art and Science Museum (LASM) has kid-friendly exhibits. They include the Science Station with hands-on exhibits and games for ages between 7 and 12. The Discovery Depot allows kids from 6 months to 9 years old create art projects, to climb into a replica of a tree house and to play with puppets and a train set.

      In the Solar System Gallery, visitors learn about asteroids, comets, planets and famous astronomers like Galileo. Kids will also enjoy the Ancient Egypt Gallery that features a mummy.

      Additionally, LASM has programs for kids and families throughout the year, including an "Alice in Wonderland" Family Day, a weeklong astronomy camp and days with discounted admission prices.
