Summer Fun Activities for Kids in Massachusetts

Massachusetts has plenty of activities for adults during the summer, including the Berkshire Theatre Festival, the Tanglewood Music Festival and golf outings at one of the many courses throughout the state. But kids can also get in the summer fun in The Bay State, where they will find sports venues, amusement parks and zoos.
  1. Lowell Spinners

    • The Lowell Spinners minor league baseball team gives kids a great venue for watching baseball. The Spinners--the short-season Class A New York-Pennsylvania League affiliate for the Red Sox--play 38 home games from June to September in a 5,030-seat ballpark. The venue includes the Swampland Kids Area that has a giants slide, an obstacle course and other activities. During games, the team's three alligator mascots greet and entertain fans. The Spinners' alumni list includes future Major League stars like Jacoby Ellsbury, Jonathan Papelbon, Hanley Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis. Lowell is located in the northeastern part of the state.

    Six Flags New England

    • Kids won't know where to begin first at Six Flags New England. The amusement park includes rides for kids who are 36 inches and under such as spinning tea cups and a train journey. Parents can also go with their kids on several rides, including a classic carousel and a steel family roller coaster. The faster-paced rides may be appropriate for older kids. The park has water rides and entertainment shows that feature dancing and singing. Additionally, kids can meet Looney Tunes characters like Bugs Bunny throughout the park. Six Flags New England is located in the southwestern part of the state near Springfield.

    Southwick Zoo

    • Kids can interact with animals at the Southwick Zoo. For example, you can feed Eurasian Fallow Deer in the 35-acre deer forest, which includes a pond filled with frogs, tadpoles and turtles. Visitors will also enjoy seeing areas that have birds, giraffes, leopards, lions, primates and tigers--though you'll want to keep your distance a tad more than from the deer. The zoo features the Skyfari Sky Ride that takes you around the venue. The Southwick Zoo is in the central part of the state near Worcester.
