Budget Back Packing Holidays

Holidays do not need to be expensive. Backpacking on a budget can be a wonderful way to see a destination. Backpacking gives the traveler more opportunities to interact with locals, other travelers and culture because the traveler will not be isolated in hotels. Backpackers are also more mobile, giving them freedom to travel easier.
  1. Planning Travel

    • Proper planning ensures the most cost effective and hassle free traveling experience. Research flights well in advance. Always check multiple sources and airlines. Check frequently as flight prices change. Check out local airlines, not just North American ones as they may have deals not listed on North American travel sites. Research local travel options as buses, metros and trains are the preferred method of travel in many countries. If traveling to several countries, a train pass like the EuroRail pass may provide unlimited travel within certain countries.

    Lodging

    • Lodging is the second largest expense for travelers. The backpacker has three options for a low-cost bed. Camping, hostels and staying with locals. Camping permits at camp sites are relatively inexpensive and most camp sites have showers and bathrooms. Book in advance because during peak seasons popular camp sites may be full. Hostels can be a viable alternative in cities. The price of a hostel varies depending on the amenities and country but they are generally much cheaper than hotels and also can be a good opportunity for socialization. Staying with locals is the preferred option as it will likely be free and locals can show you local hot spots. If the traveler does not know any local residents, they can use sites like couchsurfing.com to find locals willing to host travelers. Always use caution and common sense when staying with people you don't know.

    Food

    • Food can also be expensive. Eating out for three meals a day adds up. Cooking food can help minimize those costs. Many hostels have a small, basic kitchen that the traveler can use. When staying on camp sites make use of a bonfire to cook foods. When staying with locals, prepare a meal for your hosts at their home. It is always cheaper to prepare your own meals with food purchased from the supermarket.

    Entertainment

    • Having a fun time in a foreign city doesn't have to be expensive. If a night of partying is on the agenda, avoid paying for severely marked-up drinks in a bar by purchasing your own. Buy drinks at the supermarket and drink where you are staying or in a park (check if this is legal first.) Then when going to a bar purchase only one or two drinks. In addition, select a venue that is not charging a cover. Look for free events in the local paper. Street festivals, parties and exhibitions can provide the traveler with some fun free entertainment.
