How to Plan a Cheap Trip

Sometimes life gets hectic, stressful and overwhelming. You need to take a trip, get away and relax, but finances are tight and you want to make sure you aren't worrying about money while you are away. There are always ways to trim a few bucks from your budget when planning a trip especially if you take the time to plan it properly.

Instructions

  1. Initial Planning

    • 1

Plan the type of trip you would like to take. Weekend getaways, week-long excursions, a month abroad or a day-trip are just a few ideas to consider. Once you've decided the type of trip you want to take and with whom, you'll be able to decide on the details of the vacation.

    • 2

Make a list of possible destinations. From the list of vacation spots choose the most affordable places and start looking at prices. Start by looking at spots closer to home.

    • 3

Find deals on flights, accommodations or other modes of transportation to reach your destination. There are many sites online dedicated to finding vacation deals. Travel packages will often save you money if you can find deals that include airfare, lodging and even meals.

    • 4

Read articles on your destination. The more information you can gather on your vacation spot, the more you can prepare financially.

    • 5

Choose destinations that are in the off-season. By traveling during non-peak times, you will save a large sum of money and you will have a more relaxing trip because there are fewer people traveling.

    Accommodation Selection

    • 6

Research various types of accommodations. Hotels, motels and condos may be the most popular lodging choices but you may be able to save money by choosing a bed and breakfast. Depending on the time of year you are traveling, you may be able to get better rates as well.

    • 7

Choose lodging options that favor your affiliate programs. If you have a loyalty program with a credit card or business, check to see if there are any discounts that may apply through the program. You may be able to rent a car, book a hotel and go out to eat at a lower rate because of benefits you have through a loyalty program.

    • 8

Book accommodations in advance and for an extended period of time. By booking ahead and choosing one place for the entire duration of your trip, you may be able to get discounts through the company or through the website you choose.

    Food and Excursions

    • 9

Plan to eat in for some of your meals. Choose lodging that will allow you to cook on-site. This one decision may save you hundreds of dollars.

    • 10

Research your destination with activities in mind. Every location has free or low-cost activities you can enjoy. Plan excursions that will be fun but also wallet-friendly. Once you are on vacation, pick up a local paper or talk to locals in the area about free attractions, discounted events or fun things to do on a budget.

    • 11

Look before you eat. Many restaurants have a webpage with prices listed or post their menus outside the physical establishment. Choose restaurants that are within your budget, so you don't have the unfortunate experience of walking into a restaurant that is too expensive and pay more than you wanted to.
