Cheap Train Travel to Scotland

Scotland's spectacular scenery can best be appreciated through the window of a train. Travelling at off-peak times and booking in advance will usually reduce the cost of any journey. Railcards offering discounts on many journeys are also available.
  1. Railcards

    • Railcards can be purchased from any mainline station or online at National Rail Enquiries. The basic railcard is available to those between the ages of 16 and 25 (or mature students). The Friends and Family railcard is designed for those traveling with children; the Senior railcard can be purchased by travelers over the age of 60. Each of the railcards costs £26, is valid for a year and entitles the holder to discounts on most rail fares.

    Advance Booking

    • From the south, Scotland can be accessed by either the west coast main line (operated by Virgin trains) or the east coast line (operated by East Coast.) Both companies offer discounts to travelers who book online in advance.

    Off-peak Travel

    • Discounts are always available to travelers who are prepared to journey at less popular times. On Virgin trains, discounted travel is between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. or after 7:45 p.m.
