Small Group Budget Tours in Indonesia

When traveling to far flung destinations like Indonesia, the cost of airfare can be fairly expensive, but those costs can be offset by booking a small budget tour to be able to see the country. At the same time, traveling on a tour bus with a large crowd of people can take away from really seeing and experiencing the country. Small tours are also an excellent option for solo travelers or new travelers, they offer all the perks of traveling alone with the added bonus of a knowledgeable and local guide.
  1. Gap Adventures

    • Founded in 1990, this touring group, based in Canada but with an office in New York City, offers a variety of different types of tours, including budget or "basic" tours, that the company describes as "grassroots travel at its most interesting." Gap is a sustainable travel tour group focused on adventure travel off the beaten path rather than resort style travel. Gap Adventures offers trips with several basic groups with groups no more than 15 people,(10 is average) in Indonesia as of August 2010, ranging from an eight day Bali adventure to a 15 day trip starting in Jakarta and ending in Semarapura. The trips include visits to local coffee plantations, exploration of temples or shrines and snorkeling or swimming off of Menjangan Island. New trip guides are published annually and prices do not include airfare, although they can assist you in booking a flight if you wish.

    • An independently owned and operated tour agency in business since 1987, Tucan was Small Tour Operator of the Year in "British Travel" 2009. Also offering trips for solo travelers willing to be paired up with others of the same sex for accommodations, Tucan offers a nine day Lombok Rediscovered tour spanning from Padang Bai to Kuta. Another tour is a 21 day "Into Indonesia" trip running from Yogyakarta to Kuta Beach and including items such as camping, visiting temples and trekking Mt Rinjani. The tours do not include airfare in the price quoted and the average size group is between eight and 12 people with a maximum of 18. The Indonesian tours offered by Tucan are adventure tours, meaning individuals ranging from 18 through 60 are welcome and that you should be fit enough to participate in the active excursions as well as carrying your own luggage on public transport. Accommodations booked on this tour are called "pheasant hotels" equivalent to a two star hotel, or a hostel and guest house. They are chosen for their location and ability to interact with locals and get a real taste of Indonesia rather than the hotels amenities or star rating.
