A vacation at Walt Disney World outside of Orlando, Florida, can be a major expense, but there are ways to cut some of the costs. One tip is to sign up for the free email newsletter at Mouse Savers for deals and discounts, including ticket discounts. Research your trip and plan carefully. With a little bit of effort, you'll find places to save money.
One of the easiest ways to save money on a Walt Disney World vacation is to travel during the off-season. You can usually find deals September (after Labor Day) through the beginning of February. Keep in mind that this does not include Thanksgiving or Christmas weeks; those are two of the busiest weeks of the year. Many hotels, including those owned by Disney, offer substantial off-season discounts. Research hotels online, but call to make the reservation. Ask for the lowest price they can offer; often you can receive a discount.
One of the biggest questions you need to ask yourself is whether you want to stay on or off Disney property. The Disney hotels are more expensive than the budget hotels but come with extras. If you're flying to Orlando, staying at a budget Disney hotel might save the cost of renting a car if you take advantage of "Disney's Magical Express." It's a complimentary service where Disney transports you from the airport to your hotel or directly to the parks. Disney hotel guests also receive transportation all over the Walt Disney World property. Several times a year Disney offers a dining package to hotel guests, taking care of another expense. On the other hand, many hotels in the area offer free shuttle service to the parks, complimentary breakfast or refrigerators in the rooms. Do your research, and see what will work best for you and your budget.
Set a budget for souvenirs, and stick to it. If traveling with kids give them a set amount that they're allowed to spend each day and don't give in. Pay in cash instead of using a credit card, it's easier to keep track of your spending and stay on your budget. Instead of buying all your souvenirs in the parks, consider a souvenir shop. The T-shirt you buy might not say "Disney" but it will still be proof that you visited Orlando. If Disney souvenirs are a must, try the character stores at Belz Factory Outlet World or Orlando Premium Outlets.
There are a few items you might want to carry into the parks with you, so you won't have to buy them there. Crackers, granola bars or raisins will take the edge off of hunger so you won't be as tempted to buy a snack. If you need a memory card, film or batteries for your camera, make sure you pack them; they're expensive in the parks. A lightweight rain poncho will save the expense of buying one for a sudden downpour. Don't forget aspirin, bandages and sunscreen.
