Cheap Holidays in Spain

Cheap lodging and eating options in Spain are plentiful. Three things are essential to choosing where to stay and understanding the Spanish lodging system: the number of people you are traveling with, the types of lodgings that Spain has and the star system.

  1. Pension

    • The Spanish pension is the most inexpensive and simplest accommodation available. The pension is usually a family-run operation located within an apartment building. Singles, doubles and sometimes triples and quad rooms are available. Shared-bath accommodations and private-bath options are usually available, affecting price. You might also be able to rent a television set for your room. Sometimes morning coffee and a basic breakfast are included in the price. Linens are generally provided, but don't count on hot water. Keep an eye out for curfews.

    Hostal

    • Spanish hostels, unlike some places, usually rent beds to travelers of any age. Hostels usually offer bunk beds in variable size rooms shared by travelers not traveling together. Linens typically cost extra. Hostels often have common areas with televisions, vending machines, and sometimes bars and cafes. They also commonly market local attractions such as tours and rentals. More private options for rooming and bathing are also often available in hostales. Hostales often have curfews.

    Hoteles

    • One, two and even three-star hotels can offer excellent deals in Spain for travelers moving around in groups of two or more. Hotels have private baths, maid service, towels and other linens. Twenty-four hour reception and hot water are all included in the price.

    Menu del Dia

    • The "Menu del Dia" is the Spanish version of the price fix menu. It typically includes a drink (non-alcoholic, draught beer, or wine), salad or appetizer, main course and a dessert ("postre") or coffee.

    Tapas

    • One can eat well and inexpensively by ordering tapas. Spain is famous for these delectable treats, which originated as small sandwiches placed atop drinks to prevent flies from drowning in one's glass. Great tapas include "gambas al ajillo" (garlic shrimp); "tortilla" (frittata); "patatas bravas" (spicy potatoes); "lomo" (pork loin); and "croquetas de jamon" (ham croquettes).
