Just north of Nags Head is Jockey's Ridge State Park, which is the home of the tallest sand dune on the East Coast. Continually moving, this enormous dune was once one of many. The rest have been destroyed by development in the area. In a reversal of fate, however, the dune engulfed a miniature golf course during its migration. Hike through this Sahara-like terrain, or bring your hang glider--this area is a mecca for hang gliding fans.

Visit neighboring Roanoke Island to see the gorgeous Elizabethan Gardens, and the greater Fort Raleigh National Historic Site in which the gardens are located. The area is the site of the very first attempt at an English colony in the New World by Sir Walter Raleigh in the late 1500s.
An entire colony of settlers disappeared from this area, and the "Mystery of Roanoke" still baffles scholars today.
