The Best Family Cruises for Teenagers

Teens are the hardest age group to please when it comes to family vacations. They're too cool for the family camping trip; they would rather hang out in their room than take a road trip. Cruise ships, however just might be the right vacation that will keep teens happy. Most cruise ships today have comprehensive children's programs and go out of their way to ensure that their teen guests have their own hangout spaces, activities and parties just for them.
  1. Carnival Dream

    • Carnival Dream debuted in 2009 with a host of teen-centric spaces and activities. Circle " C" club is exclusively for "tweens" ages 12 to 14. Supervised activities in their own lounge include playing video games, dance parties and watching movies. Club 02 is for teens ages 15 to 17, where they can have their own space for hanging out and partying until 2 a.m. Teens can also participate in competitions such as a ping-pong tournament. Teens will enjoy the big screen Carnival Seaside Theater for open-air movie nights, the Fun Hubs, which are internet stations spread throughout the ship, and the Carnival WaterWorks Waterpark, featuring a long, twisting Drain Pipe water slide. Teens can also sign up for teen-only shore excursions.

Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas

    • Parents will probably never see their teens on the world's largest cruise ship. The Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas is big on teen fun with a massive H20 Zone water park, two Royal Caribbean Flowriders, allowing guests the opportunity to surf on a ship, and three teen exclusive spaces, Fuel Disco, The Living Room, and The Back Deck. Tweens ages 12 to 14 will have themed parties, such as the All White Party, learn how to be a DJ, and hang out at the teen casino. Teens ages 15 to 17 can dance the night away at the Fuel Disco, or the Teen Casino, learn how to make mocktails, and try out the rock-climbing wall. The ship has a Generation YSPA where teens can get treatments such as Fake Bake and the Heavenly Massage. They can also sign up for teen shore excursions.

    Disney Dream

    • While teens may at first think they're too old for a Disney cruise, they will quickly discover that the Disney Dream cruise ship is anything but childish. Takings its maiden voyage in January 2011, the Disney Cruise offers hip and innovative spaces for its teen guests. The Edge lounge for tweens ages 11 to 13 features an illuminated dance floor, laptop computers, and a large video wall comprised of 18 LCD screens. Vibe Lounge is an indoor and outdoor space for teens ages 14 to 17, combining a coffee shop feel with a hip nightclub atmosphere. The space features a dance floor, video consoles, Internet cafe, and sun deck with a splash pool. Teens receive a special key card to access the lounge. Activities in the lounge include parties, karaoke, and a digital scavenger hunt. Teens can also enjoy 3-D movies poolside, and the AquaDuck, the first ever water roller coaster at sea.
