Places to Visit With Infants in South Florida

When you're a parent with an infant, it's still possible to take your child almost anywhere you want to go. Unlike the toddler stage, there's little danger of temper tantrums or picky eaters who restrict where you can eat. That said, there are certain places in South Florida that may especially delight your little one.
  1. Aquarium

    • There's so much to see and do in an aquarium; the flurry of fish, the splashes of a dolphin show or the tranquil swimming of the manatees. The Miami Seaquarium is a great place for families. Infants will enjoy watching the reef fish go by in the 750,000-gallon salt water fish tank and watching the manatees swim in the underwater exhibit area. The Seaquarium also features live dolphin, shark and orca presentations that may interest you and your baby.

    Music

    • Even at a young age, infants can begin obtaining an ear for music. Many "Mommy and Me" classes are available throughout South Florida, but one well-respected option are the kids' music classes at the University of Miami. The MusicTime for Babies class features ear training, singing and instrument time for infants up to 15 months old. Classes take place in a number of locations, including Coral Gables, Doral and Pinecrest. Sessions are typically four months long, but you may be able to do a drop-in session by making prior arrangements.

    Splash Parks

    • While the beach is always a viable option for a day trip in South Florida, the waves and sun can be a bit overwhelming for an infant. To suit the little ones, Miami offers a number of "splash parks" with fountains where kids can cool off and have some fun. Crandon Park offers one of these splash parks, and added amenities like a bath house with showers, changing rooms and a nature preserve perfect for taking an afternoon stroll. There's also a two-mile long beach with gentle surf and cabanas for rent on site.

    Play Cafe

    • For a bit of down time, check out a coffee shop and play place that is friendly for both parents and kids. One such place is Cafe Bambini in North Miami Beach, offering an extensive play area with blocks, climbing structures and discovery zones that are appropriate for children of various ages. With the cafe's sandwiches, panini and sweets, parents can meet other parents for coffee or lunch while the babies explore.
