Car Transport Folkestone to Paris: Not Possible via Channel Tunnel Rail
No. Eurotunnel Le Shuttle (Folkestone ↔ Calais) carries vehicles — but only on the Folkestone–Calais segment. There is no through-train service carrying cars from Folkestone to Paris.
How It Actually Works
- Drive to Folkestone terminal (M20 J11A)
- Le Shuttle: 35 min crossing → Calais terminal
- Drive off → A26 / A1 / A16 → Paris (290 km, 3–3.5 hr)
Why No Train+Car to Paris?
- Gauge/loading gauge: French high-speed lines (LGV) built for TGV (standard gauge, 3.15 m width). Car-carrying wagons (Auto-Train) use classic lines.
- SNCF Auto-Train (discontinued 2019): Previously ran Paris–Bordeaux, Paris–Nice, Paris–Briançon — overnight, car + sleeper. Ended due to low demand, high cost, LGV priority.
- No Eurostar car carrier: Eurostar is passenger-only; tunnel safety certification excludes vehicle shuttles beyond terminals.
Alternatives
- Drive the whole way: Ferry (Dover–Calais/Dunkirk, 90 min) or Le Shuttle + French autoroutes
- Ship car separately: RoRo (Wallonia, DFDS) or container (Southampton → Le Havre) → collect in Paris
- Rent in Paris: Often cheaper than transport + French insurance + vignette
Le Shuttle is excellent for the Channel crossing — but you drive the French side.
