What did the French do in Maine 17th century?

In 1604, Samuel de Champlain made his first voyage to the New World. He would return to North America 21 times. Champlain explored the coast of New England, the St. Lawrence River, and the Great Lakes. He founded Quebec in 1608 and led the French exploration and colonization of Canada.

The French also established settlements in Maine. The first permanent French settlement in Maine was founded in 1604 on St. Croix Island. In 1613, the French established a trading post at Castine. The French also built forts at Pentagoet (Castine) and on the Kennebec River.

The French claimed all of the land between the St. Croix River and the Kennebec River as part of their territory in North America. They called this territory Acadia. The French and English competed for control of Acadia for many years. The French eventually lost control of Acadia in 1713 after the Treaty of Utrecht.
