Funding Sources for the San Antonio River Walk and the Appalachian Trail

The San Antonio River Walk and the Appalachian Trail were developed through entirely different funding mechanisms and organizations. The River Walk, a iconic urban waterway in Texas, was primarily funded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the 1930s, with later expansions supported by local bonds and private investment. In contrast, the Appalachian Trail, a 2,190-mile hiking path stretching from Georgia to Maine, was conceived by Benton MacKaye and built by volunteer hiking clubs coordinated by the Appalachian Trail Conference (now the Appalachian Trail Conservancy), with significant land acquisition funding from federal and state governments, as well as private donors.
