Amish Steam Train Tour

The simple life of the Amish is fascinating for those caught up in modern hustle and bustle. The historic Strasburg Rail Road carries passengers from Strasburg to the town of Paradise through Amish farmland of Pennsylvania's Lancaster County.
  1. History

    • Trains began running in 1851 and ceased in 1957 due to declining business and damaged track. A group of concerned rail fans organized to save and rebuild the facilities and to acquire historic locomotives and cars from across North America, reopening the railroad in 1958.

    Locomotive and Cars

    • A large, coal-burning steam locomotive pulls carefully restored cars on the 45-minute ride. Coach cars are restored in Victorian style. More luxurious accommodations are found in the air-conditioned President's Car and in the first-class Parlor Car. Food can be purchased separately in these two cars.

    Specialty Tours

    • Visitors can also experience themed tours along this route. As of 2010, the Wine and Cheese Train Tour runs from April to November. The Great Train Robbery has a tour scheduled for the months of April, July and October. The Trains and Troops Tour occurs on November 6 and 7 to honor Veterans Day, with re-enactors representing the military history of the area.
