Why do missions have fountains?

Most of the missions in the southwestern US were founded by Spanish Catholic religious orders. Fountains were important to both the natives and the Spaniards for watering livestock and farming, as well as for personal hygiene. In addition, fountains were often used for religious ceremonies and rituals, such as baptisms and blessings.
