Machu Picchu Visitor Statistics: How Many People Visit Each Year?

According to Peru's Ministry of Culture, approximately 1.5 million tourists visited Machu Picchu in 2019, the last pre-pandemic year with full data. This marked a dramatic increase—more than double the visitation from 2005—reflecting the site's surging global popularity.

The Inca citadel, perched at 7,970 feet (2,430 meters) in the Andes, has become one of South America's most iconic destinations. To protect the fragile ruins and manage crowds, Peruvian authorities have implemented measures including:
