For a trip back to the Delaware of days gone by, stop by the Old Swedes Church on Church Street, a stone and brick beauty from 1699 that is purportedly one of the oldest chapels in the nation in continuous use. The old graveyard is even older, and visitors will also appreciate the old stained glass windows--along with several other nice details.
Enjoy an afternoon on the recently developed Riverfront, a handsome area of boardwalks, new shops and restaurants, and other diversions, along the Christina River. Seafood fans will have a few options, including Harry's Seafood Grill, and bargain-hunters will enjoy the Shipyards Shops--a stretch of outlet stores that includes Coldwater Creek and L.L. Bean.
See a superb performance in a spectacular venue at the Grand Opera House on North Market Street. A palatial palace constructed in 1871 in the style of the French Second Empire, the Grand now hosts Opera Delaware and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra; big-name music headliners like David Crosby and Natalie Cole are also frequently on the bill.
For a night of delightful dining amidst tasteful and trendy surroundings, make reservations at Deep Blue Bar and Grill on West 11th. Fish lovers will absolutely savor such specialties as a lobster and shrimp chowder and a macadamia-crusted cod, but there's plenty more to pick from--such as pan-roasted rack of lamb and herb grilled chicken.
A fun and funky glimpse into the region's past can be relished at the Delaware History Museum on Market Street, where a former Art Deco Woolworth's store has been transformed into an eclectic gallery of items from the state's past. Old board games, pottery, lithographs, cool clothes and a chair owned by George Washington are just a taste of what you might see at this amusing museum.
There are few places more perfect for a night out for live music and libations than Kelly's Logan House on Delaware Avenue. Housed in a beautiful brick home from 1864, the terrific old tavern boasts live tunes five nights a week, great bar bites and a crowd of regulars that are ready to rock every weekend.
