Swimming in Georgetown, Texas

Summertime in Georgetown is hot, with temperatures soaring above 90 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels nearly as high during July and August. When the sticky weather hits, take a dip and cool off at one of the many natural and man-made swimming areas right inside the city.
  1. Go Jump in a Lake

    • Lake Georgetown is best known for its fishing, but you also can take a swim along its north shore at Russell Park. The sand and pebble beach is open to the public from April through September from 6 a.m. to sunset. Find shade at one of 10 ramadas available on a first-come, first-served basis. Barbecue grills are not allowed on the beach, but 70 covered picnic sites are available throughout the park. An adjacent campground lets you stay on site if one day at the beach is not enough.

    The Blue Lagoon

    • Just six blocks from downtown Georgetown, the Blue Hole is an easily accessible oasis. Branching off from the San Gabriel River, this scenic lagoon stretches 40 yards across and is surrounded by limestone cliffs. Idyllic picnic areas are nearby where you can listen to waters tumbling over the park's small waterfall. Swim from shore or wade on an inflatable raft, but note that cliff-jumping is not allowed at the Blue Hole. The park provides restroom facilities.

Splish, Splash I Was Taking a Swim

    • Take the kids for a fun day out at Georgetown's Splash Park. The park has a shallow wading area suitable for even small children, with a mini-slide, water cannons, splash buckets, fountains and zero-depth entry. Bigger kids can enjoy slipping down three water slides. The mini-water park is one of four municipal outdoor pools in Georgetown open from Memorial Day through August. Swimming lessons, water aerobic classes and lap swimming lanes are available at River Ridge, Tennis Center and Village Pool throughout the summer months.

    Stay Out of the Sun

    • Swim year-round at the Georgetown Recreation Center's indoor pool. The pool measures 25 yards wide by 25 meters long, making it an ideal place to train for competitive swimming events. Join one of the rec center's swim teams, get moving in a water aerobics class or just splash with the kids in the family swimming area. The facility includes showers, lockers and family changing rooms. The pool is open to rec center members as well as anyone who wishes to pay a daily access fee.
