DIY Boat Steering

Anyone who has operated a small motor boat knows how nice it is to be able to steer using a wheel, rather than sitting in the back holding on to the outboard motor. Such steering systems can be constructed using cables and pulleys, allowing you the freedom to steer from the front. The focus here is on the steering but additional controls near the wheel, such as throttle, starter, choke and kill-switch allow you to control the boat from the front.

Things You'll Need

  • Outboard motor
  • Boat steering wheel
  • Steering cable (coated to protect from corrosion)
  • Pulleys to fit the cable

Instructions

    • 1

Install the steering wheel at the front of the boat. Attach it in an existing panel or fabricate a frame connected to the hull to hold it firmly in place. The steering wheel is normally on the tight side of the boat, or in the center, depending on the size of the boat.

    • 2

Attach the pulleys to guide the cable along the hull from the motor to the steering wheel. Attach them so that the cable will be either hidden or out of the way. Be sure not to puncture the hull when attaching them and use a good silicone sealant in any holes made by screws.

    • 3

Attach one end of the cable on one side of the motor with a clip. Feed the other end through the pulleys all the way to the front. Wrap it around the grooves at the back of the wheel and through the pulleys on the other side of the boat and attach it to the other side of the motor.

    • 4

Run the cable through a channel or pipe to the wheel, if there is no instrument panel at the front or channeling along the side under which it can be hidden. Avoid people or objects obstructing the cables in any way. Failure to do so can cause accidents.

    • 5

Attach the cable to the steering wheel and test the wheel action in relation to the motor position. If the position remains unchanged, the cables are too loose. Tighten the cables in increments as you test the cable connection. It should take several revolutions to turn the motor all the way to either side from the center position.
