Bike & Barge Trips in Eastern Europe

Bike and barge trips combine the best aspects of land and sea travel. After biking through the scenic countryside during the day, you board your ship, eat your dinner and travel to a new location, where you can begin your outdoor exploration anew. While these trips are enormously popular in Western Europe, they can also be quite expensive. Bike and barge trips in Eastern Europe are often cheaper, and the experience is no less breathtaking.
  1. Istria, Croatia

    • Tripsite offers an excursion through Istria, Croatia's westernmost region. You will begin in the city of Pula and will move slowly north during the eight-day trip through Istria. In addition to Pula, you will visit the coastal cities of Porec and Rovinj, along with the Lim-channel and the islands of Brijuni. You will spend seven nights on a motor yacht and will be provided with breakfast and dinner daily. Each day, you can choose to stay on the ship or join the day's guided cycling tour. The average bike trip is 18 miles long and covers slightly hilly terrain. The cost of the trip starts at just over $1,300 per person.

    Dalmatia

    • If you are looking for a Croatian trip for the whole family, Tripsite also offers an island-hopping jaunt through southern Dalmatia, a region on the Adriatic Sea. Dalmatia stretches into a number of nations, but is located mostly in Croatia. After arriving in Split, the largest city on the Dalmatian coast, you will spend seven nights in the cabin of the ship San Snova, which will take you to the islands of Brac, Korcula, Mljet and Hvar. During the day, you and your family can explore nearby towns, catch some sun on the deck or leap into the sea for a swim. Guided walking and bicycle tours are available. The cost of the trip starts at about $1,260 per person.

    Montenegro

    • A company called Hooked On Cycling Holidays offers a bike and barge trip that begins in Croatia and traces the coast of neighboring Montenegro. After meeting in the coastal city of Dubrovnik, Croatia, you will spend the night on a ship that will transport you to Montenegro's Bay of Kotor. During the trip, which lasts eight days, you will put in more than 100 miles on a bicycle and will visit Kotor, Budva, Bar, Virpazar and Cetinje, the secondary capital of Montenegro. On the eighth day, the last leg of the journey will take you back to Dubrovnik. Some of the bike trips run through mountainous areas and require a basic level of fitness. The trip starts at just less than $1,700 per person.
