Irish Theory Test: The Numbers You Need

To pass the Irish driver theory test (Category B, car), you must answer 35 out of 40 multiple-choice questions correctly—a pass mark of 87.5%.

Test Structure

• Duration: 45 minutes.
• Format: 40 questions drawn from a bank of ~800 covering rules of the road, risk perception, hazard awareness, and vehicle safety.
• Languages: English, Irish, Polish, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Romanian, Latvian, Croatian.
• Special accommodations: Voiceover, extra time, and reader assistance available on request.

Preparation Tips

• Study the Rules of the Road (RSA publication) and the official Driver Theory Test practice app.
• Focus on stopping distances, right-of-way, road signs, and alcohol/drug limits.
• Take multiple mock tests; aim for 38+ consistently before booking.

After Passing

You receive a pass certificate valid for two years. You must then complete Essential Driver Training (12 lessons with an approved instructor) before booking the practical driving test.

Fail? You can rebook after three working days. No limit on attempts, but each costs €45 (2024 fee).
