How wouId land eIevation have changed if Cartier had traveled 15O miles west from Montreal?
Cartier would not have found higher land if he traveled 150 miles westwards because 150 miles west of Montreal is still a flat plain. The land does begin to rise 20 miles west of Montreal, slowly at first, but more quickly as you go further. For instance, Ottawa, 100 miles west of Montreal has an elevation of 190 feet above sea level, and Kingston (about 165 miles) is 246 feet above sea level. But it's not until you get past Toronto, about 335 miles from Montreal, that the elevation begins to rise dramatically, up to 1500 feet above sea level, on the Niagara Escarpment.
